(New York - WABC, March 8, 2007) - There's an ever-changing art exhibit on display in Queens, much like the news. It is literally replaced every 24 hours.
Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Glassberg has more on this art work.

It's not just one artist contributing to this project. It's two dozen and they are all bound by one rule that they create something that deals with the news of the day that Thierry agrees with.

Don't get too attached to anything you see on these walls because at 12:30 p.m. everyday, artists enter the circular gallery at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center and get to work. They take down the art work that was hung before and replace it with their own new creations inspired by news of the past 24 hours.

"I found since I have been engaged in this project, I'm reading The Times, I'm looking at the BBC and I'm looking at the AP," artist Gail Rothschild said. "It's got to be a story that jumps out and bites me."

On Monday, Gail Rothschild was struck by bizarre die off of honeybee. The day before her piece was about Afghanistan's booming opium crop. She has created a different piece every day since exhibit opened early February.

The idea is Thierry Geoffroy's but is a recombination of a number of other peoples ideas. He calls it Emergency Room in part because he believes there are so many crises facing the world which artists can and should address.

"You can see things that other people cannot see," Thierry Geoffroy said. "So when you look at the newspaper and when you watch the news on TV, you can spot a lot of things that are strange to him."

Mac Premo has created short animations. It is about the diplomacy of North Korea visualized through the negotiation chairs. He and other artists agree the daily deadlines offer up a new sort of artistic challenge.

"It is good practice," an artist, Mac Premo, said. "It feels like good practice, conceptions."

"It was incredible opportunity to step aside from what I have been doing in my studio practice and to devote my self to this project," Gail Rothschild said.

The exhibit runs through March 19th. The best time to go is at about noon, so you can see yesterday's pieces replaced by the newest creations.

Thomas Jeffeson a Marxist lunatic?

From Noam Chomsky - Here is a little piece of interesting fact. Near the end of Thomas Jeffeson's life, he spoke with a mixture of concern and hope about what had been achieved, and urged the population to struggle to maintain the victories of democracy.
He made a distinction between two groups- The Aristocrats and Democrats. Aristocrats "fear and distrust them into the hands of the higher classes." This view is held by respectable intellectuals in many different societies today, and is quite similar to the Leninist doctrine that the vangaurd party of radical intellectuals should take power and lead the stupid masses to a bright future.

Jefferson specifically warned against "banking institutions and monied incorporations" and said that if they, grow, the aristocrats will have won and the American Revolution will have been lost. John Dewey was one of the last spokespersons for the Jeffersonian view of democracy. In the early part of this century, he wrote that democracy isn't an end in itself, but a means by which people discovered and extend and manifest their rights, Democracy is rooted in freedom, solidarity, a choice of work and the ability to participate in the social order. Democracy produces real people, he said. Thats the major product of democratic society-real people. Like Jefferson and other classic liberals, Dewey recognized that institutions of private power were absolutist institutions, unaccountable and basically totalitarian in their internal structure. Today, they're far more powerful than anything Dewey dreamed of.

This literature is all accessible. Its hard to think of more leading figures in American history than Thomas Jefferson and John Dewey. They're as American as apple pie. But when you read them today, they sound like crazed Marxist lunatic. That just shows how much our intellectual life has deteriorated.

This is some pretty amazing facts about how are society is overpowered by large corporations and institutions. No matter how much one works, pulls their wait, strives for a better life, their lives will be controled by these groups and not Democracy. Democracy means very little today as it might seem. Put your money into Corporations they are the ones ruling the country today.

US Falsifies Evidence Against Iran To Justify War

This is an ongoing process that hasn't yet fully materialized into a justification for an attack, but it's coming. The process is just as inevitable as was the Iraq war that we all foresaw in November of 2002. Only this time I believe the US will use Israel to start the war so as to "force" the US into joining in order to "protect our troops" in Iraq from the inevitable barrage of missiles that Iran will rain down in retaliation. The US will claim it is only launching a "limited" attack on Iran. However, it will be wide-ranging assault and will concentrate on hitting Iran's civilian and industrial infrastructure as well as the full range of military targets in order to bring Iran to its knees. I repeat, it will NOT be a surgical strike upon only Iranian nuclear targets, though it will be billed as such.
As Craig Unger said in his Vanity Fair article entitled: From the Wonderful Folks Who Brought You Iraq. "Once again, neocon ideologues have been flogging questionable intelligence about W.M.D. Once again, dubious Middle East exile groups are making the rounds in Washington--this time urging regime change in Syria and Iran. Once again, heroic new exile leaders are promising freedom."
As Taylor Mash in Global Research points out, the US claims that Iran is "aiding" the insurgency while arming and training Shiite militias, which incite the insurgency. Naturally, the neither the US government or the US media give any specifics on Iran's "aid"--at least nothing verifiable--so that the American public can't put two and two together. Journalists are once again forced to repeat the official claims as their only story.
"United States officials in Baghdad were reported to be in possession of Iranian made weapons. In a brazen display of 'intelligence', the Americans proudly showed off their Iranian-made weapons to reporters. [But predictably, the US banned all cameras and recording devices so that no one could take away any evidence of the phony display the US was making.]
"Examples of the allegedly smuggled weapons were put on display, including EFPs, [81mm] mortar shells [used as roadside bombs] and rocket propelled grenades which the US claims can be traced to Iran. The weapons had characteristics unique to being manufactured in Iran. ... Iran is the only country in the region that produces these weapons, an official said."
But as Kurt Nimmo pointed out, Iran has no plants capable of manufacturing 81mm mortar shells: "Many were made as recently as last year--ruling out the possibility that they could have been left over from the many arms caches scattered across Iraq by Saddam Hussein's regime. Of course, as this is a sloppy neocon ruse, as per usual, there is a problem here. Can you guess what it is?
"If you guessed the date, you win a Cupie doll. For some reason, the geniuses at the Pentagon have failed to explain why the Iranians used a date from the Christian Gregorian calendar and not one from the Islamic Persian calendar. According to the Muslim calendar, the date stenciled on this mortar shell should read 1427, not 2006. And why did Iran, a country speaking and writing in Persian, a language written in a version of the Arabic script, decide to label their shells in English? Maybe they thought it would fool the infidels?"
I might add that various government connected "sources" are countering Nimmo's assertions by claiming an Iranian "Arms merchant" made the shells on behalf of Iran. Nimmo isn't being so easily put off, however. It appears this new cover story has the neocon's finger prints all over it: http://kurtnimmo.com/?p=766.
What about the Steyr .50 caliber sniper rifles the US has found in some insurgent weapons caches? First, there is the issue of "what brand of insurgents." There are Shia insurgents and Sunni insurgents and the US-controlled al Qaeda. It makes a difference which group possessed this cache of weapons. The US doesn't say. If they were Sunni (which constitute the vast majority of insurgents) they are enemies of Iran as well and hardly recipients of Iran's largesse. If Shia, the US has long been a provider of weapons to this group (openly and covertly) as well.
Juan Cole writes how the figures concerning US deaths attributed (by implication of location in Baghdad) to Shia is false: "This NYT article depends on unnamed US government sources who alleged that 25 percent of US military deaths and woundings in Iraq in October-December of 2006 were from EFP bombs fashioned in Iran and given to Shiite militias. This claim is one hundred percent wrong. Because 25 percent of US troops were not killed fighting Shiites in those three months. Day after day, the casualty reports specify al-Anbar Province or Diyala or Salahuddin or Babil, or Baghdad districts such as al-Dura, Ghaziliyah, Amiriyah, etc.--and the enemy fighting is clearly Sunni Arab guerrillas. And, Iran is not giving high tech weapons to Baathists and Salafi Shiite-killers. It is true that some casualties were in "East Baghdad" and that Baghdad is beginning to rival al-Anbar as a cemetery for US troops. .... Overall, only a fourth of US troops had been killed in Baghdad through the end of 2006. But US troops aren't fighting Shiites anyplace else--Ninevah, Diyala, Salahuddin--these are all Sunni areas. For a fourth of US troops to be being killed or wounded by Shiite EFPs, all of the Baghdad deaths would have to be at the hands of Shiites."
Over 800 of these armor piercing rifles were exported from Austria to Iran in 2005. The US claims that over 100 have made their way into insurgent hands and can be traced to Iran. But that is far from proof, and we must be skeptical of claims from our own government that has been known to manufacture evidence (and weapons) with fake markings on them to cast blame on Iran. I have also recounted the stories of innocent Iraqis arrested by coalition forces, sent to the green zone for interrogation, and then told to get into a car and drive to another location in Baghdad. The car just happens to be loaded with explosives and is set off by remote control, unbeknownst to the driver. These suicides bombings are therefore not really suicides but planned provocations.
As for the rifles, we would have to know where else these rifles were exported and if the US or Britain covertly brought them into Iraq to blame Iran. Even if the US provided serial numbers from the Austrian company (which they haven't done), there would be no way to prove that the US covert operations didn't order a special set of rifles to match what was sent to Iran. Such arrangements are more common than you think in covert operations--when a Western country wants to do a false flag operation. A government which kills off its own people in falsified terrorist attacks such as OKC bombing and 9/11 is capable of anything.
Taylor Mash continues with the analysis of US hypocrisy over its claims that Iran is aiding insurgent groups:
"The defense analyst said Iran was working through 'multiple surrogates'-- mainly 'rogue elements' of the Shiite Mahdi Army--to smuggle the EFPs [Explosive Formed Projectile] into Iraq. He said most of the components are entering the country at crossing points near Amarah, the Iranian border city of Meran, and the Basra area of southern Iraq. ... The 'evidence' against Iran and the Mahdi Army continues to pile up. But there is something fishy here.
"The Bush administration claims that Iranians caught in recent raids buttress clams of Iranian involvement. The targets of American ire appear to be Iran and the Mahdi Army. However, the Iranians were captured in Kurdish held Erbil and in Abdul Aziz al-Hakim's compound in Baghdad. In both instances, the Iranians were working with American allies in Iraq--the Kurds and the SCIRI.
"The Bush administration has indeed made a fine bed with terrorists in Iraq. There is very little doubt that Iran is supporting the Shia factions and the Kurds in Iraq. However, the factions Iran is supporting are the same factions that the Bush administration is supporting. The Shia faction that gets the least support from Iran, and that is ideologically the least aligned with Iran, is the Mahdi Army. Yet, the Administration's plan, as laid out in the Hadley memo, appears to isolate the Mahdi Army and empower the very factions, Dawa and SCIRI, that Iran has been helping.
"The Bush administration is spinning a story about Iran that is full of contradictions. The Bush administration cannot claim to target Iran for arming the same groups that the United States itself is arming, without addressing its own behavior and alliances in Iraq. It has been clear from the start that the United States has put in power terrorists and thugs (Dawa and SCIRI) in Iraq. To support its drumbeat to war against Iran, it cannot now cry foul without addressing its own hypocrisy in Iraq. To the extent that they have both sponsored the same actors in Iraq, the Bush administration and Iran have been allies.
"So, when the Bush administration claims that some Iranian arms have been found in the hands of Shia militia in Iraq, I am unimpressed. The United States has, over the last four years, armed the Shia militias to the teeth by equipping the SCIRI- and Badr Brigade-controlled Iraqi Interior Ministry. In the contest of arms shipments to Iraqi Shia militias, the United States wins the arms race hands down. Having armed, equipped, and trained a party to a civil war, the Bush administration has been the driving force of instability in Iraq. When the Bush administration accuses Iran of fomenting sectarian violence in Iraq, it ignores the elephant in the room, that is, the United States."
Gabriel Ronay writes that President Bush "is preparing to attack Iran's nuclear facilities before the end of April and the US Air Force's new bases in Bulgaria and Romania would be used as back-up in the onslaught, according to an official report from Sofia. 'American forces could be using their two USAF bases in Bulgaria and one at Romania's Black Sea coast to launch an attack on Iran in April,' the Bulgarian news agency Novinite said. ... President Ahmadinejad of Iran has further ratcheted up tension in the region by putting on show his newly purchased state of the art Russian TOR-Ml anti-missile defense system."
Congress does have the power to stop this attack on Iran: Claudia Nelson states that "[o]n the question as to who has ultimate say so, Section 5(c) of the War Power Resolution makes this crystal clear, stating, 'Notwithstanding subsection (b), at any time that United States Armed Forces are engaged in hostilities outside the territory of the United States, its possessions and territories without a declaration of war or specific statutory authorization, such forces shall be removed by the President if the Congress so directs by concurrent resolution.' In other words, Congress can mandate the removal of troops at anytime, if there has not been a formal declaration of war." However, it has to be a binding resolution--not the pathetic "non-binding" variety the Democrats are playing with.

Colonialism and the "scramble for Africa"

In the late nineteenth century, the European imperial powers engaged in a major territorial scramble and occupied most of the continent, creating many colonial nation states, and leaving only two independent nations: Liberia, an independent state partly settled by African Americans; and Orthodox Christian Ethiopia (known to Europeans as "Abyssinia"). Colonial rule by Europeans would continue until after the conclusion of World War II, when all colonial states gradually obtained formal independence.
Colonialism had a destabilising effect on a number of ethnic groups that is still being felt in African politics. Before European influence, national borders were not much of a concern, with Africans generally following the practice of other areas of the world, such as the Arabian Peninsula, where a group's territory was congruent with its military or trade influence. The European insistence of drawing borders around territories to isolate them from those of other colonial powers often had the effect of separating otherwise contiguous political groups, or forcing traditional enemies to live side by side with no buffer between them. For example, although the Congo River appears to be a natural geographic boundary, there were groups that otherwise shared a language, culture or other similarity living on both sides. The division of the land between Belgium and France along the river isolated these groups from each other. Those who lived in Saharan or Sub-Saharan Africa and traded across the continent for centuries often found themselves crossing borders that existed only on European maps.
In nations that had substantial European populations, for example Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa, systems of second-class citizenship were often set up in order to give Europeans political power far in excess of their numbers. In the Congo Free State, personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium, the native population was submitted to inhumane treatments, and a near slavery status assorted with forced labor. However, the lines were not always drawn strictly across racial lines. In Liberia, citizens who were descendants of American slaves had a political system for over 100 years that gave ex-slaves and natives to the area roughly equal legislative power despite the fact the ex-slaves were outnumbered ten to one in the general population. The inspiration for this system was the United States Senate, which had balanced the power of free and slave states despite the much-larger population of the former.
Europeans often altered the local balance of power, created ethnic divides where they did not previously exist, and introduced a cultural dichotomy detrimental to the native inhabitants in the areas they controlled. For example, in what are now Rwanda and Burundi, two ethnic groups Hutus and Tutsis had merged into one culture by the time German colonists had taken control of the region in the nineteenth century. No longer divided by ethnicity as intermingling, intermarriage, and merging of cultural practices over the centuries had long since erased visible signs of a culture divide, Belgium instituted a policy of racial categorisation upon taking control of the region, as racial based categorisation and philosophies was a fixture of the European culture of that time. The term Hutu originally referred to the agricultural-based Bantu-speaking peoples that moved into present day Rwanda and Burundi from the West, and the term Tutsi referred to Northeastern cattle-based peoples that migrated into the region later. The terms described a person's economic class; individuals who owned roughly 10 or more cattle were considered Tutsi, and those with fewer were considered Hutu, regardless of ancestral history. This was not a strict line but a general rule of thumb, and one could move from Hutu to Tutsi and vice versa.
The Belgians introduced a racialized system; European-like features such as fairer skin, ample height, narrow noses were seen as more ideally Hamitic, and belonged to those people closest to Tutsi in ancestry, who were thus given power amongst the colonised peoples. Identity cards were issued based on this philosophy.

CNN denies Nigerian allegations of staging report

ABUJA, Nigeria (CNN) -- A Nigerian government spokesman on Monday accused CNN of paying for and staging a report that showed 24 Filipino hostages being held by masked gunmen in the remote mangrove swamps of southern Nigeria.

"We have evidence that some of these people were actually paid to put up a show," Nigerian Minister of Information Frank Nweke Jr. told CNN International about last week's report by Jeff Koinange, CNN's Africa correspondent.

"It was a paid job, and that's exactly why we are very upset about it," he said, without offering evidence.

"He had actually approached other people before then to do the same thing and his offer was declined. And he shopped around for more people and found those criminals who were willing to play ball with him and they put on the kind of show that they put up and which was shown around the world."

CNN and Koinange flatly denied the charge. In a written statement, CNN said it did not pay for any part of the report, nor does the network pay for interviews.

The report showed the hostages, held captive since their cargo ship was seized January 20, seated on white plastic chairs, lined up in a row.

As dozens of militants, dressed in black and wearing black ski masks, danced and fired automatic weapons into the air, the hostages appeared immobilized by fear. (Watch Koinange's report, and a talk with CNN's Anderson Cooper about criticism of it))

"The government is trying to get them released," Nweke said. "But to make a show out of it in the way that your reporter did is unacceptable and, to our minds, undermines global efforts in the war on terror."

Nweke said he and his entourage had recently traveled through the Niger Delta and had seen projects intended to help the area's residents, such as health clinics and the construction of bridges, but witnessed none of the scenes shown in the report. "You can imagine my surprise when I saw the kind of pictures that were put out on CNN portraying the situation of war and crisis in the Niger Delta," he said. "There was absolutely no correlation whatsoever with what we had on the ground and what CNN International put out there."

In denying the information minister's allegations, the network said that the only money that changed hands was the standard rental for a motorboat and captain -- about $700 -- and the standard fee to an area freelance journalist for his help in reporting and translation, about $150 per day for three days.

CNN said it will send a letter to Nweke asking him to provide any evidence to support his claims. If any credible evidence is forthcoming, CNN said it would report on that.
CNN crew goes to hideout in Niger Delta swamp

Members of the militant group, who said they were part of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, led CNN's crew to their hideout in a swamp in the Niger Delta. MEND has recently ratcheted up its battle to redress what it says is the unequal distribution of the nation's oil wealth.

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer. In 2005, it was the world's sixth-largest exporter of oil, but the conflict there has cut distribution by an estimated 500,000 barrels per day, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The militants are threatening to hurt the oil sector even more.

"We are going to descend on all foreign interests in the Nigerian economy, either in the river or in the land," Maj. Gen. Tamuno God's Will, the group's self-described leader, told CNN.

He said his group -- which claims 200,000 fighters -- will soon launch "Operation Black Locust," aimed at key installations across the country.

"We are telling all expatriates to leave Nigeria, not only the Niger Delta, but to leave Nigeria. We will take lives, we will destroy lives, we will crumble the economy," he said.

Since late 2005, MEND militants have carried out attacks on Nigeria's oil sector and abducted dozens of foreign workers, releasing nearly all of them unharmed.

But in recent months, the attacks have become more brazen and more frequent. Two car bombings were carried out at oil company compounds in southern Nigeria's largest port town of Port Harcourt on December 18, and in January alone, militants abducted more than 30 people.

"The security situation in the Niger Delta region has deteriorated significantly over the past year," the U.S. State Department said last month in a travel warning. "Travel to the region remains dangerous and should be avoided."
Militants want share of oil profits to go to locals

Gen. God's Will said his group is fighting because few of the billions of dollars being made off the oil-rich deposits of the Niger Delta make it back to the Nigerian people, especially those in the Delta, home to some of the world's poorest people.

More than 2 million barrels of crude oil is pumped out of Nigeria every day, according to the U.S. Energy Department. International oil giants including Shell, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, and oil service companies such as Schlumberger and Brazil's Petrobas have taken up residence in the Niger Delta.

The militant leader said his forces are in the middle of a "struggle for the liberation of the Niger Delta, the most devastated and the most threatened region in the world."

"Our fight is against everybody," he said.

Nigerian forces have struggled in the battle. The navy doesn't travel to the regions where CNN went because the waters are so dangerous, patrolled by armed militants in speed boats that quickly navigate through the shallow swamps, Koinange said.

But Nweke said the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo has made progress in the delta over the past seven years, building hundreds of classrooms and health centers and undertaking myriad road projects.

"We still have a long way to go," Nweke acknowledged. "But the point I'm making this afternoon is that we've come a long way from where we were in 1999 under the military."

Our world today is bedeviled with may wars and rumours of war. There is war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Israel and Lebanon, North Korea in their intransigence in building a nuclear weapon, Iran is at the verge of completing its nuclear ambition, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has taken to a verbal war with American President George W. Bush.

These are all wars with causes and the people propagating these wars are looking forward to achieving one form of physical benefit or the other which can be deducible from each country’s foreign
policy objectives.
But as an African of Nigerian descent living in the United States of America, I have come to understand that the western media have dragged themselves into a war with Africa. This war is not like any other explicated above. It is a new frontier in perpetually keeping the psyche of an average African person low in the eyes of the world. The media’s poor sense or lack of it on how Africans live is posing a lot of problems with the way we are perceived by even our own children.

If you have ever seen the portrayal of Africa in the media; CNN, FOX, ABC, etc, it is always when there is war or starvation. I’m not saying it’s wrong to bring to the world’s attention a certain patricidal war that has refused to go away that oftentimes some countries of Africa bring to bear on themselves. Africa is a continent made up of 53 countries. There is nothing wrong in being specific about which country has a certain event going on.

This lack of awareness on the part of the media is largely responsible for the seeming ignominious behavior of an average American towards events outside the United States. In all of these, I’m really compelled to ask; is there any particular crime committed by Africans to deserve this level of disrespect by the western media? Or is it a question about race superiority?
On the contrary, if you live in Nigeria, for instance and have the opportunity of watching most western media channel, you will begin to have the erroneous and misleading thinking that all Americans are well to do. This reasoning has, however, proved to be inductive and untrue.

In spite of what they try to portray, we now know the difference. It is not possible for instance to show any part of Newark, Camden or Detroit that is not only drug infested, but are also ghettoized in African edition of CNN or FOX. It’s my conviction therefore to conclude that the media are engaged in a war where they are not only the initiators of the case, but are also the judge of their own cause.

The last of this one-sided war on Africa reached its peak when ABC network, the self-proclaimed second largest network in America, showed a documentary on the activities of fraudsters in Nigeria preying on what the presenter, Mr. Brian Ross, described as the gullibility of American citizens. In the series of events that led to this conclusion, I’m convinced that it must have been difficult for the ABC anchorman to accept the fact that other groups of people could outsmart his American wise men and women.

The truth of the matter is that any American citizen who is so obliged to make such easy money, which he did not clock the time for, tax free, away from the prying eyes of the IRS, is a thief. Maybe, I would have been so assuaged if the ABC anchorman had put it bluntly rather than euphemized the criminal intention of his country men.

In a swift reaction to the supposed documentary, the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Frank Nweke indeed added what I consider a very brave and incontrovertible insight into the American corporate scandals which led to the liquidation of Enron and World. Com, and advised Mr. Ross to concentrate on those as they are much more than a handful and presents a more threatening and worrisome implication in the world today than what is going on in Nigeria. To this end, I will relish the confidence exhibited by the minister knowing full well that if a verbal war was to ensue, Nigeria will hold its own end of the propaganda. But come to think of it, the WorldCom and the Enron corporate scandals were real and real people were disproportionally denied their life savings known as 401k using the popular parlance.

The part of the show that really made me sick in the stomach was the fact that the only place Mr. Ross took his cameramen to showcase as the economic hub of Lagos state was the daily market [Oshodi market] which in the American representation is a flea market. And he had the effrontery to describe Lagos as a “poor and crime ridden shame of a city.”

But in all these conclusion of the ABC anchorman I’m compelled to ask if he was also lodged in ‘Oshodi market Hotel too’? I would not be surprised to know that he and his crew members were lodged at the Los Angeles part of Lagos that has all the world class amenities and hotels and even more expensive buildings than those inhabited by the presenter. What about the Lagos Island with all the high rises and skyscrapers buildings? The beautiful natural land of Victoria Island that harbours about six beaches where people go and unwind. I suppose the camera could not work for those magnificent and well construed nature land which intentionally were subdued but could not be denied in his subconscious
It must, however, be understood here that I’m not trying to make any briefs for any attempt by some disgruntled and eccentric individuals in Nigerian society to engage in activities that will undermine the character of hard working Nigerians in the US or any other part of the world. I personally feel so sad that the activities of a few idiots has become the definition of the strength of character of the Nigerian who work so hard to put food on the table, provide for their family abroad and help solve real existential problems.

Corollarily, it must be noted that such criminal activities are also common in America with American citizens as the architect of such craft of obtaining from unsuspecting victims. Just a cursory look at the six o’clock news in the local stations will readily prove that in such states as New York, it is easy to pull out a deed in the internet and sell someone’s else house while they went out shopping for grocery.

The real issue here is to accept the juxtaposition of industrialization with all kinds of fraud since extreme capitalism will naturally lead to expropriation and exploitation of the underprivileged in the society The people so disenfranchised will naturally find a way to redress the injustice done to them by people who have so much and don’t know what to do with the surplus.

African societies are going through what is termed in the political literature as legitimization crises. The countries of Europe and Americas went through such experiences and even worse as the lot of most African countries today. But the mere fact that we all have to accept the concept of 21st century on the terms and definitions of the western countries cannot eliminate the natural process of political democratization which its end thereof is political stability and highly developed political culture.

Therefore to avoid any form of political fixation, the African societies should be helped to and encouraged to exorcise any shred of characterization emanating from the philosophical hobbesian state of nature.

It’s about time the other races of the world begin to acknowledge the uniqueness and the exclusivity of other races. Nobody is superior to nobody in any kind of way, and experience over the century has proved that beyond any reasonable doubt.

There are avaricious black people, so also are there avaricious white people or Asian people. There are stupid people from all races so also are there intelligent and very rational set of people from all races. Race superiority or inferiority is nothing but a myth and should be dismissed without any scientific and rational basis.

I’m from Nigeria and I’m very proud of it. In our organic style of living, especially in the small villages, nobody goes to sleep hungry because everybody can produce just enough for himself and his family. And a lot of extended family members add enchantment to the already colorful style of living.

The so-called western civilization is the reason for all these societal maladies. As it was aptly described in the American movie, I Robot, the police chief told Will Smith that ‘Guy creates monster, monster kills guy,’ so why bother about it? The kind of social issues we face today is a result of the supposed western civilization which encourages an unprecedented level of disparity between the rich and the poor. Put differently, interactive social forces created miscreants and cheats and which turn around to haunt their creators.

It’s so embarrassing that the ABC anchorman was aided by an EFCC agent or whoever it was that was awash with some stupefied presence on TV possibly savouring his newfound friendship with guys who only meant to undermine the country with his most biased and perverse portrayal of whatever issues that was being investigated. It’s my view that the guy, whoever he is in the rank and file of the EFCC, be reprimanded for feathering his nest against the image of our country.

I’m a member of the Junior Chambers International and I have taken an extensive and comprehensive look at the creed and had wished for a day when “the brotherhood of all men will transcend the sovereignty of all nations.” It looks to me like this may be a mere travesty of good intentions but the media war on Africa will be a good place to start from

Triangulating Global Warming

Stemming from the global warming issue I see three primary topics at hand.
At this point in time its not such a cut and dry issue. It was easy back in the day to blame it on the ozone and cfc's. There is more at work here and the people in control have too much to loose and the greed has covered their eye to the severity of the situation. I guess how can the complexity of the issue be boiled down by us throughout the course of the project.
Maybe we should create a generic timeline to follow. Allowing for a 24 hour delay. We formulate general weekly topics rooted off of the global warming issue. We then search for current news items to focus the artwork around.

The three of us each come from unique backgrounds and specialization. How can we triangulate an issue but not suffocate it by trying to define it too sharply. We are not specialist in this subject although we would most likely be considered more informed than most. How can we become more specialized than we already are or who do we need to include to make a more informed artwork.

Some comments are well thought out and educated while the others are not so much. The piece as a whole becomes rather strong when you add all of these elements together. The theme we have treated on Day 1 of ER is on the topic of Global Warming. Collecting from the blogs and news sites from around the world posted in the last 24hours we assembled a series of statements and images which relefect the diverse opinions circulating on the topic. In our collage of words and visuals we sought to reveal the complexity of the issues at hand and also its emotional impact on the way we perceive our world . We also underlined, through our selections, the sometimes extremely obtuse and callous reactions of some who, clearly would prefer to find excuses rather than to prevent the potentially inevitable. Whether Global Warming be real or not, whether it be man made or not, we have a clear responsibilty as a race to begin protecting our environment and generating sustainable industries and ways of living which will steer the planet towards greater prosperity. the 6th century BC Greek Philosopher is a tough guy but might have some words of truth for us in the times of deep change.In his works he criticizes his predecessors and contemporaries for their failure to see the unity in experience. He claims to announce an everlasting Word (Logos) according to which all things are one, in some sense. Opposites are necessary for life, but they are unified in a system of balanced exchanges. The world itself consists of a law-like interchange of elements, symbolized by fire. Thus the world is not to be identified with any particular substance, but rather with an ongoing process governed by a law of change. The underlying law of nature also manifests itself as a moral law for human beings.

His efforts to go beyond physical theory in search of metaphysical foundations and moral applications is something we greatly need in this day and age. When so much data and documentation about ourselves and our world around us is being generated, what is the underlying meaning of all this for us, what is our moral and spiritual infinity?

Sometimes it is good to look deep into ancient wisdom to find the truth of the present. That looking glass can be more objective and accurate.

What we define as devastation in our own country isn't always the same for other parts of the world. However, we are making note of this and trying to change our outlooks the best we can.

P.S.1 proudly presents Emergency Room, a constantly evolving collaborative exhibition conceived and led by artist Thierry Geoffroy, a.k.a. Colonel. To realize this project, Geoffroy has invited over thirty local and international artists to create and install new works in a range of media, all generated daily in response to current events. Emergency Room is on view in the third floor Archive Galleries from February 8 through March 19, 2007.

Emergency Room is motivated by a desire to learn what other artists think about current affairs from varied international perspectives under strict time constraints. By providing a physical space in which artists can display works made in reaction to current events, Emergency Room takes the pulse of the artistic community today. On each day of the exhibition, artists will install new work in response to the events of the last 24 hours, an arrangement that recalls daily news cycles. The artworks stay on view until the next morning whenthey are moved to an adjacent archive space and replaced by new work.

Emergency Room seeks to foster a sense of community among the participating artists and an atmosphere in which the gallery serves as a laboratory both for personal expression and formal experimentation. Artists will come with very different methodologies, from the politically charged to the personally intimate, to interact with a specific space and develop an on-going project together.

French-born Thierry Geoffroy (b. 1961) has presented his art internationally since 1995. Recently, he had solo exhibitions at Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen, Denmark; IKM Museum, Oslo, Norway; Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, Netherlands; Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany; and Devron Arts, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In 2006, Geoffroy presented Emergency Room at Galerie Olaf Stuber, Berlin; and Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen. He received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from France in 2003. Geoffroy will present a project at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Raphaele Shirley, Lee Wells, and Paul Middendorf exhibit new collaborative works and installations for Emergency Room at PS1 February 8th.

Everyday there are topics which seem ignored or under represented by the media, such as the war, genocide, global warming and more. It is important to keep finding clues and links which would reveal new evidences on the reality we are living in. It is important to seek and redefine what constitutes the news as it seems to the mainstream media is fairly myopic (using censorship through omission) about what is really going on around us. The emergency room group will be replicating the idea of a set format, as the news media have which will be the base structure, image, the pictorial context of expression. Working to generate an iconic image, logo and memorable framework, the images will be disfigured or added to on a daily basis, creating a log, a trail, of emergency events. Fragments of paper, written notes, video, and performance will unfold a picture for the public. The transient and fast paced environment coupled with the premise of the installation is a great opportunity to experience a new form of artistic expression, experimenting and focusing intensely on the moment and the current pulse of the world.

Raphaele, Lee, and Paul are artists who are specializing in political critique, public interventions and collaborations. The triangle created between these artists will generate a dialogue, a smoke signal path, and a critical exchange related to what constitutes the news and how this can be expressed within this context. Varying in mediums used, alternating freely between live video, internet, performance, painting, photography and installation according the needs of the moment we will document everyday, each day at PS1. Using the fabric of the city as our palette of expression and source of news, bringing back to Emergency Room fragments of urgency and emergency. In 2000 Paul received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and began launching his career as a painter. Currently Paul works as Director and Founder of Gallery Homeland. He has shown nationally and internationally, and most recently produced and performed in Scratching the Surface in Portland Or, Lifeboat-Miami for Art Basel's International Art Fair, Lifeboat-Hamptons for The Scope Art Fair, and was co-curator for Waterways, an Istanbul Biennale project. Raphaele Shirley lives and works in NYC. She specializes in collaborative projects and Public Art installations and events. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in interventionist projects such as “Waterways” and “Two Continents and Beyond” in the Venice (2005) and Istanbul Biennales (2005) and has shown recently in the Art Basel Video Lounge curated by Michael Rush. She has co-created several experimental projects including PAM Perpetual Art Machine and The New York International Fringe Festival.
